Rumours have been circulating amongst sections of the hunting fraternity regarding closure of hunting in the Greater Alpine National Park. This is certainly not the case.  
In summary, at the Hunting Advisory Committee meeting on the 14 April, we discussed defining a small number of camp grounds, most notably the Wonnangatta Homestead Flat at Conglomerate Creek as a 'camp ground' to enable firearm regulation enforcement. This campsite is used by hunters as well as remote four-wheel drive tourers and other bush users.
 
Another matter that was spoken about at the Hunting Advisory Committee was the opening up of approximately 100,000 hectares for hunting (by stalking) in the far eastern part of the Alpine National Park. Again this detail has not been worked through. 
 
I have spoken with and exchanged emails with the Sporting Shooters Association of Australia (SSAA), the Australian Deer Association (ADA) and a local deer hunters on wePlan who are not opposed to such ideas. But we need to meet to discuss this in more detail with recognised hunting groups and other recreation bodies; we have meetings scheduled with the SSAA, the ADA and other recreation groups in the coming weeks to go through this detail and it will then appear in the ‘work in progress’ draft plan on this website. So stay tuned.
